Since its inception in 1890 by Maharaja Bir Chandra Manikya, the school was developed by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya, when he acceded to the throne in 1896. It was renamed as Umakanta academy in 1904 in recognition of good activities of the Prime Minister of the Kingdom Sri Umakanta Das.
